Cornwall, ON -The cycling season is here and the Cornwall Community Police Service would like to remind all motorists to be on the lookout for cyclists.  Cycling is a fun, healthy and an inexpensive way to get around, but cycling can be hazardous, unless your bicycle handling and traffic skills are in good shape.

Your bicycle is a vehicle under the Highway Traffic Act.  This means that as a cyclist you have the same responsibilities to obey all traffic laws as other vehicles on the road.  You must stop for red lights, stop signs and ride in the proper direction on one-way streets.

Here are a few safety tips for cyclist.

  • Wear an approved bicycle helmet to reduce the risk of injury.
  • Know where to ride, on the right side of the road.
  • Know your hand signals and use them.
  • At night you must have a white light on the front and a red light or reflector on the back of your bicycle.

We have cycling guides and bicycle safety manuals to help you understand the rules to riding a bicycle, for more information call 613-933-5000 extension 2758.

By visiting our web site atwww.cornwallpolice.com you can now register your bicycle from the comfort of your home.

Register your bicycle with us today!  There is no fee charged for this service.  The idea is to have the name and address of the owner on file so that your bicycle may be returned to you should it be lost, stolen or left abandoned.
