The local representing inside workers in departments such as finance, social services, housing, water and waste choose a local organization on a quarterly basis on whom to bestow the donation.
Says Anna Boisvenue, Treasurer of Local 3251, “it is absolutely critical for them that the money be used locally. Rachel’s Kids was a natural choice because of its support of local organizations geared towards children.”
Founded by Cornwall dentist Rachel Navaneelan, Rachel’s Kids seeks to aid impoverished, neglected and abused children as well as numerous education initiatives, including awarding scholarships and building schools. Rachel’s Kids also integrates with other aid organizations in order to improve the lives of children in need both locally and globally.
Fundraising events include an Annual Garden Party & Auction, Annual Have a Heart Gala, Sponsor A Child Program, and a New York City Bus Tour.
95% of all funds raised go directly to the children.
Anna Boisvenue has thrown out a challenge to other locals to match or exceed the Local 3251 donation. Says Boisvenue, “The work done here is so important.”
