Notice To Residents & Property Owners Regarding Noxious Weeds

Under the Weed Control Act, R.S.O. 1990, Chapter W.5 Sections 3, 13, 16 and 23, you are requested to destroy all noxious weeds on your property. The main purpose of the Weed Control Act is to reduce the impact of noxious weeds on the industries of agriculture and horticulture. Primarily this act applies to agriculture and horticulture lands that generate income or other benefits to agriculture; this excludes lawns, gardens and private areas for personal enjoyment and leisure.

In Urban Areas – Sections 3, 13, 16 and 18 do not apply to noxious weed seeds that are far enough away from any land used for agriculture or horticultural purposes as they do not interfere with that use.  Pursuant to By-law No. 4869, Wild Parsnip is now designated as a local weed within the boundaries  of the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry and shall be deemed to be a noxious weed for the purposes of the Weed Control Act, R.S.O. 1990, c.W.5. All properties within the Township of South Stormont are hereby requested to be in compliance with the Weed Control Act by the 10th day of June, 2013 and throughout the season.  We appreciate the efforts of local residents who maintain and voluntarily control weeds and grass along their respective driveways and roadsides.

For any inquiries, please contact Peter Leyenaar, Weed Inspector, 613-774-3885.

FINANCE

Final Property Tax Bills

The final tax bills for 2013 will be mailed in early June and will be due in two installments: June 28 and September 30.  The Township is in the process of billing for maintenance carried out on various municipal drains.  If your tax bill contains a special charge called “DRAINS”, this amount represents your share of the total expense.

For your convenience, please be advised of the following methods of payment available:

• In person at the Town Hall, cash, cheque, etc.

• Mail cheque or money order to P.O. Box 84, Long Sault, ON K0C 1P0.

• After hours, access the drop off box beside the front entrance of the Town Hall.

• Telephone/internet banking.

• At ABMs (automated bank machines) and at most financial institutions.

Please ensure that your method of payment allows sufficient time for processing; payments must be received at the

office by the due date. For your information a penalty of 1.25% is added to all outstanding tax accounts the day after

the payment due date and continues to be added on the first day of each month until the account is paid in full. Thank

you for your cooperation. Should you have any questions, please contact the Township office.

FIRE DEPARTMENT

  • Install smoke alarms on every storey and outside all sleeping areas. It’s the law for all Ontario homes, cottages, cabins and seasonal homes to have working smoke alarms on every storey and outside all sleeping areas.

  • Test smoke alarms at least monthly or each time you return to the cottage.

  • Install and ensure carbon monoxide alarms in your cottage if it has a fuel-burning appliance.

  • Develop and practice a home fire escape plan to ensure everyone knows what to do if the smoke alarm sounds.

  • Know the telephone number for the local fire department and your cottage’s emergency sign number, in case of emergency.

  • Clean barbecues before using them. Keep barbecue lighters and matches out of sight and reach of children.

  • Check heating appliances and chimneys before using them.

  • Check with your local fire department, municipality, or Ministry of Natural Resources to determine whether open air burning is permitted before having a campfire or burning brush. Always keep a bucket of water, sand, or even a shovel close by and supervise the fire at all times.

  • Burn candles in sturdy candleholders that will not tip and are covered with a glass shade. When you go out, blow out!

  1. I wish to commend the Township of South Stormont for taking the initiative to keep constituents and neighbours informed of services, activities and township business in such a free and widely accessible media format and forum as this.

It is a wonderful expression of the township’s grasp of effective communication and openness, from which others may learn.
