FIRE DEPARTMENT
Deck the Halls with Tips of Safety
Extra combustibles such as a Christmas tree, ornaments, decorations, wrapping paper, plus additional heat sources like lights, extension cords, candles and extra visitors going in and out of your home calls for more safety precautions.
- Check real trees for dryness daily. Place trees a safe distance away from stoves, radiators, heating vents, fireplaces and any other heat source that might dry the tree.
- Plan an escape route.
- Be mindful of open flames and make fire safety a priority in the kitchen.
- Check lighting, smoke alarms and do not overload electrical circuits or extension cords.
- Be extra cautious with candles.
PUBLIC WORKS
Parking Requirements
Snow is on its way… please park your vehicle in your driveway, well off the road, until street and sidewalk cleaning operations are complete. This allows our crews to do their job and make the streets and sidewalks safe for everyone. (Vehicles interfering with snow removal or blocking sidewalks may be ticketed at a cost of $40.00)
WINTER MAINTENANCE INFORMATION
Winter weather is coming! Your assistance during the winter season will help the Township of South Stormont Public Works Department provide efficient and effective winter maintenance. Your cooperation with snow removal is very much appreciated.
-
Trucks with flashing blue lights are performing winter maintenance. Please give them room to work and pass with caution as visibility may be compromised with blowing snow.
-
Park your vehicle in your driveway, well off the road, until street and sidewalk cleaning operations are complete. This allows our crews to do their job and make the streets and sidewalks safe for everyone.
-
Residents may find it less frustrating to wait until the plow trucks have completed their street before cleaning the end of their driveway. Plow units are designed to discharge snow to the side of the road and are not capable of skipping driveway areas.
-
Snow from the end of the driveway should be shoveled to the right, facing the street. This will reduce the amount of snow being placed into the driveway during the next plowing.
-
Residents hiring contractors to plow their driveways should remind the contractor that the Highway Traffic Act prohibits pushing or placing snow back into or across the street. Doing so not only creates hazards for drivers, but also makes it difficult to keep the streets clean.
-
Current policy states that the Public Works Department will only replace a mailbox if the post, or box has a direct hit from the Township’s snowplow. Avoid installing mailboxes where they can be damaged by plowing operations. Canada Post can provide guidelines concerning the proper distances from road surfaces.
-
Residents should clear snow from the mailbox area after each plowing. Snow that remains in front of mailboxes will get compacted by post office vehicles and make subsequent plowing less effective.
-
If garbage and / or recycling pickup day coincide with plowing activities, make sure your trash can and recycling bins are behind the curb or in the driveway so the plow will not hit them.
-
Don’t allow children to build snow forts and tunnels in the snow banks adjacent to the curb, or to play near the curbs.
Please be aware that there are many factors affecting the timeline for winter maintenance service; these include:
-
snowfall accumulation,
-
type of precipitation (i.e. freezing rain, wet snow or “just plain” snow), and/or
-
the time of day the precipitation occurs.
The average completion time for each plow route is six (6) hours. Cleanup times will vary depending upon the above noted factors.
All concerns or requests relative to snow removal should be directed to the Town Hall at 613-534-8889, not individual vehicle or equipment operators.
