Cornwall, ON – Shawnna Chartrand, 21 of Cornwall was arrested on March 7th, 2014 and charged with failing to appear for prints. It is alleged that on February 25th, 2014 the woman failed to attend for prints as required and an investigation ensued. On March 7th, 2014 the woman attended police headquarters to deal with the matter. She was taken into custody, charged accordingly and later released to appear in court on a later date.

 

Cornwall, ON – Brandon Tessier, 27 of Cornwall was arrested on March 7th, 2014 and charged with breaching his recognizance for having failed to sign in as directed and failing to notify a change of address. It is alleged that on February 28th, 2014 the man failed to sign in as directed and an investigation ensued. During their investigation it was also learned that the man moved without notifying police. On March 7th, 2014 while at police headquarters for another matter the man was taken into custody, charged accordingly and later released to appear in court on April 17th, 2014.

 

THREATS

 

Cornwall, ON – A 19-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on March 8th, 2014 and charged with three counts of threats. It is alleged that on March 7th, 2014 the man threatened to damage and burn his 17-year-old ex-girlfriend’s car as well as injuring a 22-year-old common friend of theirs and burning his car. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. In the early morning hours of March 8th, 2014 the man was spotted by police and during as traffic stop was taken into custody and charged accordingly. He was transported to police headquarters and held for a bail hearing. His name was not released as it might identify the victims in the matter.

 

IMPAIRED, OVER 80

 

Cornwall, ON – Benjamine Owens, 28 of Ingleside was arrested on March 8th, 2014 and charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and over 80. It is alleged that in the early morning hours of March 8th, 2014 the man found to be operating a motor vehicle in the area of Second Street and Pitt Street while under the influence of alcohol. He was taken into custody during a traffic stop and charged accordingly. He was later released to appear in court on March 20th, 2014.

 

 

CARE AND CONTROL

 

Cornwall, ON – Stacey Peterson, 25 of Cornwall was arrested on March 8th, 2014 and charged with care and control of a motor vehicle while being under the influence of alcohol. It is alleged that in the early morning hours of March 8th, 2014 police found the woman to be in care and control of a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol at a Second Street restaurant drive through window. She was taken into custody, charged accordingly and later released to appear in court on March 20th, 2014.

 

MISCHIEF, ASSAULT

 

Cornwall, ON – A 41-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on March 8th, 2014 and charged with two counts of mischief and one count of assault. It is alleged that on January 24th, 2014 while at a local bar the man grabbed his 32-year-old girlfriend by the arm and swung her around. On March 8th, 2014 during an argument at their apartment the man punched a hole in the wall and damaged a cordless phone. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. During their investigation the man was taken into custody, charged accordingly and later released to appear in court on April 15th, 2014. His name was not released as it might identify the victim in the matter.

 

Cornwall, ON – John Laffin, 51 of Cornwall was arrested on March 9th, 2014 and charged with mischief, assault and breach of probation for failing to keep the peace. It is alleged that on March 9th, 2014 the man assaulted a 27-year-old man by punching him several times and during the assault broke the man’s glasses. As a result of the assault police were contacted and an investigation ensued. During their investigation on March 9th, 2014 police located the man at his residence, took him into custody and charged him accordingly. He was later released to appear in court on April 8th, 2014.

 

CRIMINAL HARASSMENT

 

Cornwall, On – A 37-year-old Cornwall woman was arrested on March 9th, 2014 and charged with criminal harassment. It is alleged that on March 9th, 2014 the woman sent several text messages to her 50-year-old ex-boyfriend despite having been previously warned by police not to. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. On March 9th, 2014 the woman attended police headquarters to deal with the matter. She was taken into custody, charged accordingly and later released to appear in court on April 17th, 2014. Her name was not released as it might identify the victim in the matter.

 

WARRANTS

 

Cornwall, ON – Roger Bastien, 43 of Cornwall was arrested on March 9th, 2014 on the strength of three warrants. It is alleged that the man was wanted on the strength of the three warrants for having failed to attend court, failing to appear for prints and for breaching

undertaking and probation orders. On March 9th, 2014 the man was located by police at a Montreal Road address. He was taken into custody and held for a bail hearing.

Breach

 

Cornwall, On – Leighann Neff, 32 of Akwesasne was arrested on March 6th, 2014 on the strength of a warrant. It is alleged that on March 13th, 2012 the woman breached her recognizance for having failed to report as directed. As a result an investigation ensued and a warrant was issued for her arrest as her whereabouts were unknown. On March 6th, 2014 police attended the Cornwall Courthouse as the woman was in custody on an unrelated matter. The warrant was executed and the woman remained in custody to await a bail hearing.

 

POSSESSION OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE

 

Cornwall, ON – Jennifer Diabo, 42 of Kanawake, Quebec was arrested on March 7th, 2014 and charged with possession of a controlled substance. It is alleged that on March 7th, 2014 the woman was stopped by boarder officials at the port of entry and they found her to be in possession of approximately 9 grams of marihuana. Police were contacted and assumed custody of the woman. She was charged accordingly and later released to appear in court on April 8th, 2014.

POSSESSION OF FENTANYL, POSSESSION OF FENTANYL FOR THE PURPOSE OF TRAFFICKING

 

Cornwall, ON – Members of the Cornwall Street Crime Unit in a joint effort with the Ontario Provincial Police Drug Enforcement Team arrested Frederico Belmonte, 43 of Long Sault on March 6th, 2014 and charged him with possession of fentanyl and possession of fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking. It is alleged that in the early morning hours of March 6th, 2014 the man was taken into custody during a traffic stop on Hwy.401 near the Church Street overpass. Police then located and seized the following:

–       4.5 x 25mcg Fentanyl patches street value of $ 337.50

–       31 x 100 mcg Fentanyl Patches street value of $ 9300.00

–       10 x 50 mcg Fentanyl Patches street value of $ 1500.00

For a total street value of seizure of approximately $ 11137.50

He was transported to Cornwall Police Headquarters and held for a bail hearing.

Ontario Provincial Police News Portal [STORMONT DUNDAS and GLENGARRY] Impaired Driver 2014-03-06

(South Dundas) – On 05Mar2014, at approximately 10:30pm, SD&G OPP officers had occasion to conduct a traffic stop on County Road 18, South Dundas Township.

The stop revealed that the 69yr old male driver (Dennis CASSELMAN of South Dundas) was operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

He was arrested and faces charges of:

– Driving While Ability Impaired
– Driving with More than 80 mgs. of Alcohol in Blood

He is scheduled to appear 01Apr14 in Morrisburg court.

Ontario Provincial Police News Portal [STORMONT DUNDAS and GLENGARRY] Stolen Vehicle 2014-03-10

(South Dundas) – On 09Mar14, at approximately 11:00am, SD&G OPP officers responded to a report of a theft of a vehicle on County Road 2, South Dundas Township.

The investigation revealed that sometime overnight unknown suspect(s) attended a car dealership and removed a 2014 Chevy Silverado.

The investigation is ongoing.
(North Stormont) – On 07Mar14, at approximately 10:00am, SD&G OPP officers responded to a report of a stolen vehicle on Shane Road, North Stormont Township.

The investigation revealed that sometime between 01Feb14 – 07Mar14 unknown suspect(s) attended a residence and removed a 2009 Yamaha Grizzly ATV (all-terrain vehicle) from a shed.

The investigation is ongoing.

Ontario Provincial Police News Portal [STORMONT DUNDAS and GLENGARRY] Hang Up On Distracted Driving 2014-03-10

(SMITHS FALLS, ON) – Irresponsible driver behaviour has the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), East Region, concerned about the fate of many road users this year. The OPP’s Distracted Driving campaign is underway and runs from Saturday, March 8 to Friday, March 14, 2014. During that time, the OPP will be doing its part to eliminate the threat of distracted driving through its own awareness raising efforts and focused enforcement of distracted driving laws throughout the province.

Since Saturday, March 10, OPP officers in East Region have laid 84 Distracted Driving charges.

In 2013, distracted driving fatalities surpassed both impaired and speed related fatalities in fatal motor vehicle collisions investigated by the OPP.  A total of 78 persons died in distracted driving related collisions compared to 57 impaired driving deaths and 44 speed related deaths last year.

The OPP is reminding motorists that on March 18, 2014 the current distracted driving fine of $155 will jump to $280 (this includes the increased $225 fine plus a $50 victim fine surcharge and $5 court cost).

(South Glengarry) – On March 02, 2014 at approximately 4:30am, SD&G OPP officers responded to a report of a collision involving a snowmobile on County Road 2 near 4th line Road, South Glengarry Township.
A passenger, Alex Miller, 21 of South Glengarry suffered fatal injuries in the collision.
The 27yr old male driver was identified as Joseph James THOMPSON of Hogansburg, NY.
He faces charges of:
– Impaired Operation / Care or Control of a Motor Vehicle Cause Death
– Exceed 80 Milligrams Blood Alcohol Content / Motor Vehicle / Cause accident with Fatality
– Driving while Disqualified – Provincial Suspension etc.
He is scheduled to appear 02Apr2014 in Alexandria court.
SD&G OPP officers, assisted by Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI) continue the investigation.

– on Saturday, October 5, 2013, at approximately 1:15 p.m., an elderly woman was near the escalator at the Castle Frank subway station

– the suspect approached the woman, grabbed her gold necklace, causing the woman to fall to the ground

– the suspect was able to make his escape with the woman’s necklace

Security camera images of a suspect have been released.

Man arrested in stabbing investigation, Yonatan Tesfaldet, 18

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of an arrest in a stabbing investigation.

It is alleged that:

– on Sunday, March 9, 2014, at approximately 4:30 p.m., an 18-year-old parishioner entered Calvary Church, 746 Pape Avenue

– without provocation, the 18-year-old stabbed a 25-year-old man sitting in the pew next to him

– the assault was stopped by fellow parishioners who restrained and held the man for police

The 25-year-old man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The 18-year-old has been identified as Yonatan Tesfaldet, of Brampton. He is charged with:

1) Attempt murder
2) Aggravated assault
3) Possession of a weapon – dangerous to public peace

He was scheduled to appear in court at College Park, courtroom 507, on Monday, March 10, 2014, at 10 a.m.

Arrest in drug investigation, Drugs, cash and firearm seized, Man faces seven charges

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of an arrest in a drug investigation.

It is alleged that:

– on Wednesday, March 5, 2014, the Drug Squad – Major Projects Section conducted surveillance on a man suspected of trafficking cocaine in the Toronto area

– a subsequent search warrant was executed on a home in the Central Parkway/Hurontario Street area in Mississauga, and on a 2012 Acura TL

It is further alleged that the following was seized:

– approximately 5,210 grams of cocaine
– weigh scales
– vacuum sealer
– plastic packaging
– debt list
– loaded .22 cal. Ruger handgun
– cash

Garey McKoy Harris, 36, of Mississauga, is charged with:

1) Traffic in cocaine
2) Possession of Proceeds of Crime
3) Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Cocaine
4) Possession Proceeds of Crime
5) Possession of Loaded Prohibited Firearm
6) Possession of Firearm with Altered Serial Number
7) Careless Storage of Firearm

He was scheduled to appear in court at Old City Hall, on Thursday, March 6, 2014, at 10 a.m.

(Ottawa)—The Ottawa Police Service Internet Child Exploitation Unit (ICE) charged an Ottawa man on Wednesday, March 5th 2014 following a Child Luring investigation.

 

Paul Michael GALEA, 42 yrs old of Ottawa, has been charged with one count each of computer contact with a person under 18yrs of age for a sexual purpose and sexual assault.

He is scheduled to appear in court today for a bail hearing.

(Ottawa)—The Ottawa Police Service East District Investigators have charged Manuel CLAVETTE, 28 years old, of Gatineau with Fraud for unfinished construction contracts.

 

Clavette has fraudulently taken money from four clients, in Ottawa, where the work was started but never completed.   Some victims were sub-contractors that Clavette hired to complete his own contracts but never paid them when they finished the work.  Some contracts started in 2010.  The total amount of money that has been defrauded is 44 330.46$

 

He will be facing three counts of Fraud Under and two counts of Fraud Over.

    Would square-dancing be considered a legitimate defense?

  2. Question : If distracted drivers are now accounting for more fatalities than drunk drivers why are we continuing to issue fines instead of suspending licenses ?

    We really are quite irrational in law making and definitely no longer capable of exercising even the simplest level of commonsense .

    Sadly, the only allowable “step” in this incident would have been the non-contact dosey- doe.
