TC Media Editor Making it Personal in Cornwall Over Glens Poppy Defacing Supporting H Lt Colonel Jim Brownell

dockery poppy joking MODCORNWALL Ontario – Politics has been compared to war in some ways; but sometimes it’s just petty and sometimes it’s just personal.

Maybe it’s because The Seaway News is the number three media in Cornwall? ( they moved up after Corus Radio shut down its newsroom losing three jobs in Cornwall)

Before CFN was created I had applied to work at the Seaway News as a humble journalist.  Rick Shaver at the time made a joke of hiring a student instead.   Apparently he did the same thing with seeker chick editor, and my former protege Jason Setnyk.

Fast forward a few years and TC had Rick take me out to lunch asking for me to become the Seaway News Editor and for TC to buy out CFN.

Clearly at that meeting my feelings were that Rick was doing what he was told by his superiors.   I’m not sure what he told head office; but there was no magic at the tete a tete.

Todd Lihou was brought back to journalism and became editor instead, and they added a writer position after awhile as they’d fallen to the bottom of the pack here in our market, even behind the lowly seeker chicks.

Jim BrownellFast forward to this year, and for some inexplicable reason much beloved and honoured former Liberal MPP  Jim Brownell decided to join up with a motley pack which included of all people, hyper conservative Tammy Hart, who’s the deputy mayor of South Stormont where Mr. Brownell resides.

boycott removedThe group’s  first incarnation, a boycott CFN group was taken down for the use of hate symbols and harassment.   In this case apparently anti-semitic language/images was posted.

I emailed Mr. Brownell and asked him if he was aware of some of the antics of this group and who was in it and why?  Chiefly I emailed him about its leader defacing the poppy.  When one of our contributors did a story about the defacement of the poppy a representative from the Legion responded.

“It is a first. I have never seen such a blatant defacement of our sacred symbol and believe that if other Canadians could see it, they’d be as outraged as I am,” says Bill Maxwell, who is secretary of the Legion’s Poppy and Remembrance Committee.

Now at the top of this page is the image.  We have whited out the actual offensive image at the centre; but you can see the originator of it mocking those that were offended.

Now I think this is personally rather childish.   Just for further reference I would like you to all know NO POPPYS were hurt during the making of the picture.

The image was made in tribute to one of the group’s members who was suspended from the social media group for violations of the conditions.

Personally as someone whose grand uncle was one of our Canadian troops that helped liberate the Bergen Belson concentration camp in WWII, and had another grand uncle who was a guerrilla fighter in WWII and then finished his career in the Israeli army as a Colonel, a real one; not an honorary one, maybe that was why I was shocked and offended myself?

Mr. Brownell sent this via email  after all of the images and info were emailed to him and he responded clearly so it’s not like he could say he wasn’t aware. In total nearly 20 emails went back and forth.

I am not my brother’s keeper, but I can still be a friend with my brother, even if I do not believe in or agree with comments from my brother. The same goes for my friend. I don’t abandon family or friends, just because they write or say something I don’t agree with. So stay out of my life, and don’t try to make me feel guilty, because I DON’T FEEL GUILTY, IN ANY WAY!
Jim
I support Democracy.  I support the Canadian Charter of Rights and Free Speech.  However Mr. Brownell’s profile picture at the time was shot by myself. I shared with him if he was going to actively participate in this group that he should use another photo and that I was taking back my permission for him to use it.
.
He has stated that this was his favorite photo taken of him during his political career which was an honour for me as I’m not really known for my photography.  He had invited me to Queen’s Park to attend his private member’s bill passing.
.
When he didn’t take the photo down I had facebook assist him which resulted in a rage of comments by Mr. Brownell on his personal facebook page which are still present and visible to the public as of press time.
.
Just wanted you to know that my posts are now without a photo. Unfortunately, Cornwall’s BLOGGER had Facebook remove it, as he took the photograph. My staff at Queen’s Park, in 2011, placed it as my profile photo, and I had used it since that time, as it was the only photo I had on the day that my Private Members’ Bill was debated and passed in the Legislature.
Apparently, Cornwall’s BLOGGER had taken the photo, and he has now asked that it be removed on Facebook. Unfortunately, I did not know how to remove it, so I guess I’m going to need assistance in getting a new photo with my posts. Cornwall’s BLOGGER can take the photo and shove it where the sun doesn’t shine! To my Facebook friends, I’m sorry for being so blunt, but Cornwall’s BLOGGER is way over the top.
That’s where Todd Lihou and those wacky Seaway News folks entered.  Mr. Lihou also had been a member of the hate group and the current boycott group.   He started a page to help Mr. Brownell get a new facebook profile pic which eventually was him in his uniform of the Glens, an honoury title.   Mr. Brownell still participated in the hate group (which has now gone underground).
.
To clarify; Hon. Lt Colonel Jim Brownell is actively participating in a hate group whose leader, while in the group, defaced the poppy which Mr. Brownell is aware of and didn’t choose the defend the poppy; but chose to continue while defending the very person that defaced it.
sept 5 FACEBOOK thibault calling me fat cat in the hat
Denis Thibault, besides being a City Councilor in Cornwall and an exec at the Ontario Training Board, is a writer for….The Seaway News.
.
I’ve been called a lot worse than a Fat Cat in the Hat.  I’ll certainly find a way to endure; but this is someone that makes an awful lot of public monies, some of which are mine, that is attacking me.
If you run your mouse over who like’s his comment though these are the names that show up.

You have Rick Shaver, manager of the Seaway News and former chair of the Chamber of Commerce and of course Mr. Lihou and his good lady wife.
.
The problem lies in the fact that both of Lihou and Shaver work for TC Media and there’s an election going on.    While writing opinion pieces are always fair dinkum there is a certain onus on news to be truthful.  Omission of the truth is considered lying, and of course it’s against most of the tenets of journalism to lie to the public.
.
Also, in a Democracy journalists have an actual responsibility to inform the public so that a true and proper decision can be made during elections and real Democracy be practiced.
While every outlet, including this one, has its bias, surely the lengths and degree that TC media is leaping to in Cornwall is not accepted by reasonable people?
.
Wednesday was the first election event for all candidates.    I attended as it was about the arts, and I’m one of the actual few artists running for office.  I define artist as someone that actually has been paid or achieved a certain level in the performance of their art.
.
I answered more questions than any candidate that night.  I scored quite a few points; but in Mr. Lihou’s coverage, he was in attendance, nary a word was mentioned about my attendance or performance.   In his piece before the event he mentioned one candidate for mayor but lopped me in with the list of those for council.
.
Mr. Lihou also took this picture the night my charter rights were violated and the mayor had me removed by police because he didn’t like my t shirt.

Mr. Lihou didn’t run that photo of a CERT officer in action.   Reading Todd’s coverage itself shows his true bias   LINK The story, dated on the 25th of February (the photo is dated the 10th)
Could you imagine any other TC media outlet covering this story and without using the photo above?  That’s the kind of photo that’s money in the bank for editors.
.
The man, who operates a website in Cornwall that often posts items related to community events, was asked by Mayor Bob Kilger to change his t-shirt which contained what the mayor felt was an offensive image. His likeness was, apparently, featured on a milk carton.
Does that sound journalistic?  While I get that Todd may not like myself or CFN, we have been an online newspaper since 2009 and the most read in this market since 2011.   A man?  If he knew the person why would he write “The man” instead of Jamie Gilcig?
He then  ran an editorial.
.

A man (I refuse to publish his name for a couple of reasons: one, you already know who he is and two, I’m not about to give him any more publicity than he can conjure on his own) who operates a website was wearing what Mayor Bob Kilger deemed an offensive t-shirt.

It contained a likeness of the mayor on a milk carton – not sure I understand the symbolism, but Kilger took it to heart and offered the man a choice: change or get out.

The man said no way, and had to be ejected from the chambers with a little help from the police. (By the way, hat tip to the cops for getting there in less than a minute – wow!).

.

Mr. Lihou continued:

I’m not here to suggest the posts I’ve read are accurate or not – but what is lacking is a deep sense of professionalism.

.

Irony is that what professional journalist wouldn’t ask how seven police officers, including at least one CERT officer were able to be on the second floor of a building, during a snow storm, in less than a minute without being wet, or wearing winter wear?  Or did Mr. Lihou not notice in his own words that it’s not up to the mayor to define the Charter of Rights and Freedoms that greater minds did or that a responsible journalist would actually call Mayor Kilger out for the violation of those rights?

I encountered the website operator Monday night, and used language I’m not particularly proud of –  but still stand by – in letting him know what I thought about the unwarranted criticism we received. It was probably just as unprofessional as the t-shirt, maybe more, but in the heat of the moment I felt justified in standing up to him

Yes, Mr. Lihou, outside of the council chamber, with children present, whipped out a f bomb laced diatribe at yours truly.  He just let loose.

Now when Claude McIntosh or myself write “Opinion” it’s one thing.  When Todd does as well that’s fine too; but there seems to be a certain personal attack quality by him and Mr. Shaver directed at myself and CFN that clearly is spilling into “news coverage” and the election process.

And that’s about as toxic to Democracy as well…..defacing the poppy who many consider the equivalent to defacing our flag.

Obviously Mr. Brownell, Mr. Shaver, and Mr. Lihou are not defenders of our proud heritage and those that serve us protecting our Canadian Democracy.

The election is October 27th.  Hopefully Cornwall voters can survive this black stain that these gentlemen have marred our town with.

The people will have their say and perhaps one of the reasons TC has just downsized in Cornwall, giving up most of their rented space on 2nd street after closing 20 weeklies in their chain is because more of the public read and trust CFN than those forced to get the Seaway News just to get their flyers.

  1. Politics, or anything closely related to it, is NEVER boring.

  2. A very sad reflection on people when they would stoop this low.

Very sad that the truth being told is greeted with such absolute hatred from others.

Very sad that being honest in this city also comes with such abuse and bullying from others

Very disappointing and dishonest to say the least.

CFN has paid a high price for continuing to reveal the truth to the citizens of Cornwall.

Why would others fear the truth when the truth always sets one free.

Admin: A question. The night you were removed from council re: the shirt incident, did the Mayor show you a specific dress code for any news media covering council?

If there was a specific (dress code) then this code should have been presented to media at the beginning session of council, then there would not have been an issue with the Mayor taking offense to the shirt you were wearing.

I did not or do not recall any mention of media receiving a specific dress code from the Mayor’s office.

That should be made clear so an incident such of this does not happen again in the future. Hopefully a new mayor would never stoop this low. We can hope and vote for the best and leave what has happened in the past but not forgotten.

The mayor obviously wanted attention due to the fact he drew so much attention to the issue of the shirt when all he had to do was move on with the council meeting.

It would have seemed the more adult like thing to do rather than a childish outburst that ended the way it did.

The only one shamed that night was the mayor for his lack of control, outburst of temper and unprofessional manner.

  3. Author

OWC the night of the incident there was no discussion of the dress code. I was seated and wearing my coat as you can see from the pic in the story. The inside joke at City Hall is that the mayor couldn’t actually see my shirt and thought I was wearing a different one.

The police were clearly ready to go and waiting in the building; at least the ones that initially entered. It was a sad night for our community.

Btw, I wore the same shirt back to Council with no incident.

  4. I do recall that about the police and how swiftly they acted on behalf of the mayor.

I agree, it was a sad night for our community, one of many.

I am still curious though, is there a known, expected dress code for the news media?

I do recall you calmly handling the incident in a respectful manner in spite of the unbelievable circumstances that surrounded you.

  5. Author

There is no dress code to my knowledge nor the did the police communicate about one.

  6. Another plus Admin for CFN is the fact that readers/viewers are able to readily engage in open and sincere conversation with you/Admin.

    This is appreciated by many!

You always appear more than willing to answer any true concerns about issues or questions we the readers may have.

    Thank you.

  7. Then in case there should ever be such an outburst again, there should be a dress code established and made available to the media then incidents such as the bad one that happened to you, would not happen ever again to anyone, should a specific piece of apparel upset the mayor.

One has to wonder if it was a personal attack or truly one of what the mayor thought of as appropriate dress.

If so, then one would be left to wonder why after that night the mayor did not immediately draft up a (dress code for media), stating for the record what he deemed appropriate dress and his wishes for those to comply would have been set straight.

  8. Author

OWC there is no need for a dress code honestly and there isn’t one that I would have violated that day. A minister even said I had done nothing wrong.

  9. Admin,

    I agree and understand.

My thought was if this was such a concern for the mayor then why afterwards did he not make clear his thoughts on what should be or should not be worn when media is televising council meetings.

It wasn’t and that is the point.

What makes matters worse is that it was such an obvious position the mayor had taken that night against you/CFN.

It was all so overblown by the mayor.

  10. There are and were a couple of things that came to mind the night that Jamie was told to leave the counsel by Bare Ass and the Barney Fife PD. One was that the Barney Fife PD is always stashed in the building somewhere either in the basement or in another room in case there would be some sort of trouble OR two that they got a tip from somewhere that Jamie would be coming in with such a t-shirt and had Jamie all ready to be put out and this would also give Bare Ass some publicity. There were some other things that came to mind to hurt Jamie in whatever way they could but instead of doing Jamie damage they did him a great favor since Jamie is the best for news in town and that the toilet papers of record are going down the drain where they belong. Mulch your gardens folks and clean your windows, use the paper to line your bird cages and train your puppies but as far as real news is concerned you won’t find it there but only on Jamie’s CFN.

  11. Author

OWC it was never an issue. It was a violation of my charter rights that neither he or anyone on council have apologized for. It is yet another black eye delivered by Mayor Kilger and sanctioned by his council that Cornwall has had to endure.

  12. Jamie and folks take a good look at that video again where Jamie was taken out by the Barney Fife PD and take a good look at Bare Ass’s face and he wanted to laugh. The Barney Fife PD wanted to laugh as well and some did just that. This was hilarious and like some sort of a skit. I roar with laughter every time I look at it. If you ever saw how real cops act like take a good look at other police forces and they don’t handle you gently like they did for Jamie and other people but they are brutal.

  13. Defacing the poppy should be an offence where people would be charged. Jamie I want to point out that inserting those hate symbols is against the law and people can be literally charged for that. The same goes for the denial of the Holocaust. Anybody here reading this look it up. Cornwall’s Barney Fife are not up to date on what is really going on in the world. I refer them as the Barney Fife PD for good reasons.

  14. Don’t feel too bad Jamie. I was thrown out of a well established restaurant in Gananoque back in ’76 because my hair was too long. The restaurant owner died about 30 years ago, but his son, Gord Brown, is my Member of Parliament in perpetuity. That’s one of the reasons why I’m a raving socialist after all there years.

  15. Author

Well Furtz the Freeholder still isn’t answering why they didn’t cover the first all candidates event. The Seaway News is clearly showing a distinct bias and abuse of journalistic principles under Mr. Lihou/Shaver. Corus shut their newsroom down in Cornwall. Is there any wonder how the public is to get information about what’s going on so they can make decisions on election day?

  16. My advice Jamie is as follows.. Blow up your TV. Move to the country. Raise some cattle or goats. Get a motorcycle. Enjoy the second half of your life. Life is way too short to piss it away on asinine small-town politics.

  17. Furtz I always took you for an old hippie ever since you told me that you are in my age group. LOL LOL. ROLF! I was as square as a square can be a real straight arrow. I have voted socialist and that is the truth even though I am not a socialist I did what I could so as not to put in that former professor Ignatiaf nor Harpoon Harpo but now I am going to be stuck in voting for Harpo because he is very conservative but not as conservative as what I am. Unfortunately he is my only choice in the feds.

  18. Jamie I don’t think that the big city newspapers (toilet papers of record) take sides and not publish who is running for mayor or council. What is happening in Cornwall is pure childishness and mighty hurtful. I really can’t live in a society that runs a town in that way at all. There is enough poo slinging as is here in Ottawa. Today I received a news report from David McGuinty the brother of McGuilty #1 and I didn’t even look at it but threw it in the trash – recycle. He represents my area of Alta Vista here in Ottawa. Jamie you and Leslie are going to have to knock on doors to make yourselves known because what is going on in Cornwall is unbelievable. It is a childish way to act and very very very backward.

  19. Author

Why goats? Why not sheep Furtz?

  20. Author

Jules it always comes down to money. If there was no boycott and CFN received it’s fair share of city ad dollars alone, we have three more jobs in Cornwall. Good ones, with a future and most likely unionized.

Add in the boycott dollars from CAS, the Ontario Gov’t, the Federal Gov’t, Cornwall Police, the Hospital and its foundation, EOTB, EOHU, and the many others and we’d have our online local TV station running and six more jobs.

This boycott isn’t attacking me. It’s attacking our community; jobs, youth retention and the economy of our city. And the Freeholder and SN are supporting it because they’d lose the meat off their plate.

  21. I find it personally offensive that Jim Brownell would defend the person responsible for defacing the poppy,in my eye that makes him guilty as well. My dad fought on Vimy Ridge in WW1 I have respect for the poppy & think of my dad every time I proudly wear it in his honour & other brave soldiers who were ready to sacrifice their lives

  22. Sheep are really cool too Jamie. I’ve raised goats, sheep and cattle. They are all great animals.

  23. Author

Yes Furtz, many a day I realize there’s an easier path than what I’m going through with these special folk of the cliques here in Cornwall 🙂

  24. Yup. Not only does it sound like a frustrating and thankless endeavor, but it sounds like an unhealthy way to live. At some point, before it’s too late, self preservation and contentment maybe should be considered. From a distance, it looks to me like the good folks in Cornwall have exactly the governance and cliques that they deserve.

  25. Author

You may be right Furtz. Dirty Town Under a Crooked Bridge ends with the election and the bridge coming down. That time is getting pretty close.

  26. There is an obvious epidemic of bias, cliques and wrong doing in this community.
The sad fact is that this is being encouraged and the good people suffer as does community spirit.

@Furtz: Yes, it certainly is an unhealthy way to live. I agree!

Progress is smothered, truth is denied, and trying to make headway is impossible, that is why many run away from the city, not walk!

How can there be true community spirit when there is no community truth from those who make daily decisions regarding our life and the longevity of our community?

Yes Admin, “that time is getting pretty close”.

  27. Have we all not watched enough coverage at City Hall, especially you Admin covering every meeting, to see the favoritism, the approval nods, the famous (look) of the mayor to see the obvious, I think we have all been witness to what is taking place.

When on the inside things can be viewed from a different perspective also. When you live in a community where you seek help for sick and suffering people and no help comes, then you know we are in desperate, desperate need of change!!!!

The foundation and core values that should exist are absent.

This negative, untrustworthy and bias attitude spills over into every single aspect of our community, one way or the other.

It is a trickle down from the top, or more like a mudslide leaving others destroyed/harmed, not for a few days, but perhaps for their entire life or what they have left of life to live and or enjoy.

A terrible reflection on a toxic city with ongoing toxic attitudes.

  28. Let’s review only some of what has transpired with the image of this community:

We have gained world wide recognition regarding Wiki and the toxic facts of Big Ben,

We have been world talk about various scandal that rocked the core of our community and the faith of our community.

We are recognized world wide for another toxic issue that plagues our community and is still being denied by those at City Hall.

We have hit the world stage for a plethora of negative and destructive ongoing life issues that would shame most who declare themselves as leaders of a community, but not this community.

We have another ready to go, knock them down, live event taking place right before our eyes, the same mayor wanting another go at doing more harm, more destruction and time spend in more denial of wrong doing in our community. He wants us to vote for him. This is incomprehensible!
How could anyone who has done such harm to this community actually think he is popular, or honest enough to deserve our vote.

We are faced with bias, negligence, boycotts, ignorance, and uncaring, and we are expected to vote some of these people back into positions of power…I don’t think so.

Does the fact that they have the legal teams available at a seconds notice offer them a false sense of security? Perhaps so, but in the long run, the truth always and will always still surface, regardless!!

IF this attitude was linked to only one person we could view it in a different way, not at all acceptable, but the intimidation factor carries through the entire core of these issues from one to another, till almost all representing us, give in, succumb to the warnings that come from head office or should I say, office of the mayor.

Bad enough we hold one responsible for this horrific mess and set of attitudes that are so toxic to our community, but how do we overlook all the rest that sit at that table, who all could stand up and say NO! They could speak up, but they remain, the majority, in silence allowing others to pay the price of that silence, when they should know it is wrong! Wrong, deceitful, indecent, untrustworthy and more.

Is this what we want and are willing to live through again?

One only has to watch and really hear, hear not only the words but hear the silence and in the silence we often have the truth revealed.

It will be now or never that we make our choice to move on.

IF not, then who do we have to blame but ourselves.

  29. Jamie just this morning my husband said that there are a lot of good people in Cornwall. I told him not Bare Ass and his click. His answer was that Bare Ass and his clique are not even human so you can’t count them in. Furtz is right about living in the country away from everything and it is something that my husband and I always say away from Cornwall and away from Ottawa and live out.

Yes you are right Jamie that if you had the advertisement then you could hire more people and this is all done by design to keep you down. Bare Ass and his gang know very well that you are the best there is in Cornwall and they can’t keep up with you at all because you tell the people the truth and they are hiding all their dirty tricks from the people. Each and everyone of them will pay a tremendous price for what they do to you and to the rest of the people and believe me you saw my many posts when I said that life is a wheel. Just wait Jamie something big is going to hit all of them yet and mark my word it is coming. God is one who never forgets.

  30. Furtz you are right 100% where you said that it has to be an unhealthy way of life to live under such a way in Cornwall. The vast majority of people of my age, as well as older and younger have left Cornwall and their parents encouraged them to leave because there was no future at all. Today life in Cornwall is even much worse than ever before under Bare Ass and his dirty clique. People deserve the governance that they elect. If you continue to elect a bad governance then you deserve it. If people do not put in either Leslie O’Shaughnessey or Jamie Gilcig then they will butter their bread with their tears. What Latour did as well as our famous and notorious Willie did is only the surface of what is yet to come. Many have been behind Willie and we all know them but there is more hiding behind and more and more will come out yet. Their dirty deeds do not go unpunished. If people do not wake up and really wake up then they will pay for what they did.

  31. One Who Cares you said it really well on the subject and the people (a lot of the people) are dumbfounded and only see Bare Ass and his clique in the toilet papers of record and do not know about Leslie O’Shaughnessey and Jamie Gilcig. All they hear about Jamie is negative things mostly made up from Bare Ass and company. If people knew the real Jamie they would not be thinking badly of him but supporting him in every way that they can. Jamie has been the only one who has poured out the truth and before that everything was hidden from the public. It is way past the time for people to wake up and want a better change. I said it before and I will say it again that if Bare Ass ever gets in again that things will be a great deal worse off than what you see it now. Cornwall has a very bad reputation and it is mighty black indeed and it is going to take some miracles in order to change the damage that was done. I don’t just mention words I mean what I say and always have. I can see that One Who Cares really cares about his community and I wish that more people did care and that way Cornwall would not be in such a horrible condition like you see it today. Many small communities prospered and grew because they had the right governance. It is all in your hands now and make that change before any more bad things happen. I see the storm clouds building up in the sky here and the cable and net were down yesterday for a while. Take care and think hard on the issues that I said and others. Changes is mighty desperately needed in order for Cornwall to heal and prosper.

  32. Poor Jamie. The entire world is against him. Kudos to Jim Brownell for having no fear of the blogging reaper!!

  33. @Jules,

I also wish that more cared about the truth of the matter regarding issues that involve everyone in the community.

Admin has helped in so many ways to shed light and awaken the silent in this community. I can’t speak for him, nor would I, but I would say thank you for staying the course and having the courage to address the many issues you have that have and continue to hurt our community.

We have/had a few storm clouds here but a different type Jules. There are the clouds that hover over a community when there is wrong and harm being done to others, where there is dishonesty and denial. Those clouds blacken our sky, hurt our economy, local business and our community spirit.

Quite the opposite of the opinion of Gimme-A-Break, who states “Poor Jamie. The entire world is against him.”

In fact Jamie has and continues to gain the respect of many people, some silent of course due to the culture of this city (a previous quote from Jamie) but they/we do cheer him on, they/we do hope for him to come out with flying colours and most of all they/we do share a collective respect for him sharing the truth with the residents of this community, many of whom have been kept in the dark for a long time.

No one wants this to happen in any community and as Jules stated “many small communities prospered and grew because they had the right governance.” Great words of truth Jules.

Cornwall could have prospered but we are in a continual state of being stuck in the mire and never gaining the traction to move successfully forward the way we should.

There is no equal balance and again thankfully, Jamie has tried to bring some balance/focus to the many issues that deserve our attention and the attention of any/all viewers.

Cornwall is a suffering community hurting from the past and locked in a cloak of denial, ongoing wasted time (at times of debate) and such horrific disregard for others.

If there is one thing many of us can clearly state that we can’t state about others is the fact that the entire world or the world as you know it to be, is not against Jamie.

There is a wonderful and needed respect being shown for Jamie due to his concern about our community and that is quite amazing, this was not Jamie’s hometown and yet he fights daily for equality in this community. How amazing! He continues to fight for some/many who remain nameless. He continues to be an ambassador for the truth and for issues that hurt all of us.

So we know that the entire world is not against him! Only some perhaps who are mean spirited, ready to lash out on someone fighting for their and others rights, and always it appears when truth be told, they line up to tar and feather you and try to drive you out of town.

So back to you Jules, even though we have many storm clouds of indifference now, we can hope one day the sky will really clear, there will always be people like Jamie and others willing, freely to fight for what is right and good and decent, willing to show respect for others opinions and be there for us.

The Editor/Admin of the CFN, has given greatly and selflessly to this community and I admire him greatly for that and much more, as many others do. The contributions are many!!

Because our community is one of intimidation by some others, many remain silent, in the background, but they do care.

Again Jules to you, yes indeed, Cornwall needs to heal and prosper.

Hopefully in time to help others. Hopefully in time to change the tarnished black back to the gleaming silver, and most of all to a community where truth leads the way and then light will follow.

  34. @Gimme-A-Break, this is not about Jamie. All Canadians should be outraged at the defilement of the poppy.

For one, this is the origin of the phrase…my brother’s keeper (GENESIS)

And the LORD said to Cain, Where is Abel your brother, and why do I smell his blood?
And Cain said, Am I my brother’s keeper?

Scholars agree that Cain’s insolent and arrogant response to God’s question is a sign of his inward, unacknowledged guilt. But for anyone who has difficulty relating to Genesis, imagine something more present day, a conversation between Her Royal Majesty, Queen Elizabeth 11 (who is Colonel-in-Chief of the Glens) and the Lt. Col.

HRM: Where is your respect for your military brothers, Canadians who gave their blood for your freedom? And what are you doing showing allegiance to the leader of a cyber-gang on Facebook?
Jim (as quoted above): I am not my brother’s keeper…I DON’T FEEL GUILTY, IN ANY WAY!

  35. @ Furtz,

Furtz, you offered Jamie some advice, which was “enjoy the second half of your life” and that is a good idea but if it means giving in, letting go of your beliefs and accepting the fact that the bad guys would win again, I don’t think so.

Many times one has to continue on their journey, even with the forks in the road, the lumps and bumps and the many twists and turns.

Wouldn’t some just love it if Jamie gave up, turned on his heels and ran the other direction and let go of his beliefs? Some would be gathering along the way to even cheer him on, but others would not.

One can’t always run, turn a blind eye or easily let go when it involves values, deep concerns, fighting for issues of importance and sharing the truth.

Maybe one day Jamie can return or retire to such a place as you mention, then again I feel somehow he still would be fighting for the rights of others in some way.

Jamie has managed to stay the course, under the most unbelievable circumstances that would have caused others to buckle and run away, but the true testament is that he stayed to fight for what his beliefs are, and they concern many/the majority in fact in this community.

Maybe a mini vacation for Jamie or the invitation to your home would be in order?

  36. This from Mr.Brownell associates (Boycott South Stormont news) with much more gracious and vulgar comments from that site.

Mr.Brownell you must be proud of these connections, but this is the company of people you choose.

Roberto wrote “I wonder if Cindy gives Jamie Wood?
They seem to be cohorts when it comes to SS News.”

Jene Sais-Pas wrote in reference to Jamie Gilcig ” Stop whining you come across to the people you want to vote for you as a neglected waste of human skin.”

Annette Bourdeau (Mr.Brownell’s cousin) in reference Chris Camerons announcement for running for councillor “His name is Christ! (check out the names in brackets LOL)??? Isn’t that the height of arrogance? So, the modern term for a bigot with his head up his butt is “language activist”? Political correctness once again serves the inadequate brain.

You should be very proud of yourself Mr.Brownell.

The sad reality is that I’m essentially stuck with CFN until there is some justice done. I already have false police charges and a justice system that is refusing to drop them in spite of clear evidence that I never made the calls as per the crowns disclosure. There is no gray area.

If I was to “retire” from CFN I would be an open target in this community even more so than I am now. Frankly it’s kinda scary. CFN is the only real safety net for the community in media. Just look at our election. We had the first all candidates event and the Freeholder didn’t show up and the Seaway News didn’t really report honestly or fairly.

It’s even hard to blame the public for not voting on issues when the media cover up for a corrupt political class.

  38. Jamie I could never ever go through what you are going through in Cornwall and I don’t know of anyone else who could tolerate such abuse. The cops are corrupt to the core and when that is corrupted then there is no justice at all. I am telling you this from my heart and sole that I could never ever go back to Cornwall ever again. My husband faced racism and won’t go through that again. I also feel that you are going through racism as well. Cornwall is very different to a lot of towns and the town got its reputation because of the way they behave. There is no way of changing the damage that already has been done. I see things a great deal worse than it ever has been.

  39. Thank you Mary Anne for quoting scripture. Brownell should be mighty ashamed of himself and resign at once. This is the first time that I see a politician behave in such a manner and the company that he keeps is mighty shameful. This is another piece of low life going down with the ship.

  40. Cover-up or a case of they know who butters their bread?

  41. Author

Hugger your comment may simply be pointing out the motivation for the cover up.

  42. @ OWC. It was more observation that anything. Saving people from themselves is usually a futile exercise. Not much can be done if the majority are content with the way things are.

  43. Thanks Jules (re: scripture). I wish to be clear that I do not intend personal harm to Mr. Brownell. In fact I have compassion for him and for so many others who appear to be blinded by hate and fear. I will never understand local politicians, especially those in SS, who take pride in these hateful cyber and public actions. Will they win votes for it; have they broken codes of conduct; does any handbook freely offered to assist municipal politicians with their campaigns recommend using social media to abuse a local citizen or burn his newspaper at “fun” group events? Do they want their legacy to be in the realm persecution and abuse; driving someone out of business; do they have the right to wear a poppy this November; will they bow their heads in silence on Remembrance Day and “remember” their own silence over the issue; and will they don pink t-shirts next February to celebrate their victories?

Voters should be asking themselves these questions. And local media are definitely asleep at the wheel.

Much more importantly, I have a deep and abiding respect for the Military and our honourable and historic local regiment.

Only recently did Prime Minister Harper announce that Canada will deploy elite troops to Iraq.

We live in very serious times and should be mindful of the issues that face our leaders. In addition, though I’m just a civilian and don’t pretend to know how the military views or assesses conduct, the Queen’s Commands (which anyone can look up online) do state:

    19.14 – IMPROPER COMMENTS

    (2) No officer or non-commissioned member shall do or say anything that:

if seen or heard by any member of the public, might reflect discredit on the Canadian Forces or on any of its members

  44. @ Furtz, I agree with you regarding the voice of the majority, but the alarm bells should be sounding loud and clear because it is obvious this is a nightmare happening to others.

For those who think this might not happen to them (re: what is taking place with Admin and others in this city) do think again!!! It could change the course of your life as you know it forever.

Perhaps it takes this realization/awareness to happen to a person personally before they truly grasp the very negative impact it can make on a life or lives.

If so, then in time many of that majority may know what Jamie knows, what I know and what others know and have been through.

There is one concrete thing we do know!!! The circumstances may be different, but we do know what is taking place, we have our facts, we have our documents, and we have our truth.

  45. Author

Right now City Hall has a trail of victims. City Manager and Whistle Blower Diane Shay. Former Deputy Fire Chief & Whistle Blower Rob Hinkley. Robert Menagh, who while covered for two years salary now is in mid life with this black aura hanging over him when he applies for jobs. What was that new direction the mayor and council were talking about after letting him go without cause?

One unnamed whistle blower and of course the fiasco of our 5 city works employees let go and then magically some of them were rehired and most recently the dumping of security staff at the Civic Complex, allegedly because they joined CUPE.

No, that is not how we grow a community.

  46. Admin is correct, when so much is concealed/withheld via other media sources from the public, then how can the public expect to vote on issues of importance regarding this community.

To hear/read a slanted version of the truth makes us question what is being avoided or omitted from the story.

Bias and dishonesty certainly exist when only part of the truth is told.

  47. This mayor is ruthless!!! So are some others!

What about those who sit at his table?

Can each one say they acted when they should have, or did they just sit there, silent with that look on their face.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then those who have watched these dreadful things unfold at City Hall and with the Mayor can see it all in their faces.

  48. It is not only what transpires during city council meetings that leave us concerned and point to what clearly is obvious to so many, but it is the behind the scene calls that take place that will alter forever the life or lives of people in this community.

This is what many don’t see, but sometimes we do manage to be in a position where we hear first hand what has taken place.

The writing then is so obvious on the wall and no longer are we left to wonder just what happened or took place.

It is a shocking reality and eye opener for many when this happens, but it has and it does happen and that we witness within this administration and so called leadership of the present mayor.
