Cornwall Ontari0 – Another odd bus cancellation. There is a freezing rain alert for Monday evening, but conditions as the day begins are actually nice?
Current temps here in Downtown Cornwall are -5c and clear with snow expected to start in the afternoon. The air will warm to well over 4c on Tuesday when more mixed precipitation is expected.
Warnings
4:36 AM EST Monday 22 January 2018
Freezing rain warning in effect for:
- Cornwall – Lancaster
- Maxville – Alexandria
- Morrisburg – Long Sault
- Winchester – Newington
Significant freezing rain is expected tonight into Tuesday.
Light snow is forecast to become heavier and mix with ice pellets this afternoon. Several centimetres of snow and ice pellets are likely before the precipitation changes to freezing rain. An extended period of freezing rain is likely tonight into early Tuesday with several millimetres of accumulation. Roads will likely become slippery, initially due to snow followed by a layer of freezing rain. The commute this evening as well as the Tuesday morning commute will likely be impacted by icy roads.
Freezing rain will likely change to rain early Tuesday as temperatures rise above the freezing mark. However, over more eastern regions including the Ottawa Valley, the freezing rain may persist into Tuesday afternoon.
Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy, slippery and hazardous. Ice build-up may cause tree branches to break. Utility outages may occur.
Freezing rain warnings are issued when rain falling in sub-zero temperatures creates ice build-up and icy surfaces.
Jamie, you need to write an article as it pertains to all the useless bus cancellations! This is a huge strain on people who work for a living. The best comment I got from the STEO was we are not sure if the bus companies put winter tires on all the buses? WTF? Don’t mean to ramble on but this is becoming serious. People will start losing their jobs soon! Be the voice of the voiceless.
Thanks.
Bob more of the voiceless should click the viewer donation buttons and participate with a newspaper like CFN 🙂
Jamie,
I have 2 kids and another one the way with a new mortgage. The only place I donate to yearly is the Hospice in Cornwall.
What do you think of the cancellations based solely on projected forecasts and cancelling everything from Kingston to Ottawa to the Quebec bordr and Lanark county (Perth). If it looks like they will get bad weather at 3:00 pm in Kingston they cancel the buses!
I agree with Bob. The buses, both city and school do not have snow tires. According to OC Transpo there is no manufacturer of them in North America. The system for calling snow days is broken, it has been for years. They need to implement a system where it is not a mass cancellation due to bad weather in one sector, but not in others. FIX IT, as this is beyond ridiculous.
Bot that was a collective message about clicking the donation button, but even those with little resources have sent something over on occasion. I think the STEO needs to get its act together and not do these cancellations the way they have been doing. We’re in Canada, and we’ve all grown up with Winter.
