(LEEDS, ON.) – A 42 year old Lansdowne woman is facing a string of fraud related charges after an elderly woman was defrauded out of a substantial amount of her life savings.
Members of Leeds and the Thousand Islands Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) began a months-long investigation after they were contacted in May 2018. It was learned that a 95 year old female in the Lansdowne/Gananoque area fell victim to her caregiver during a time frame previous to the time of report. Investigation revealed that the victim lost almost $150,000 and jewellery.
42 year old Martina HAVEL of Leeds and the Thousand Islands Township faces charges of Theft Over $5000, Fraud Over $5000, False Pretences Over $5000, Theft Under $5000, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000 and Breach of Trust. She is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice, Provincial Division in Brockville on March 1, 2019 to answer to her charges.
