BINGO BRAWL IN RIDEAU LAKES
(LEEDS, ON.) – Officers of the Rideau Lakes Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to investigate an assault in Rideau Lakes Township.
On February 5, 2019 at about 1:15 pm OPP officers responded to a long term care facility in Rideau Lakes Township. A physical dispute between a 79 year old woman and an 86 year old woman erupted over seating. The dispute lead to an argument which prompted some of the residents in the room to become involved in the brawl. There were no reported serious injuries.
No charges were laid after an investigation.
It’s disturbing that staff at the long-term care facility were unable to manage the situation and had to call police. Behaviour like arguing and becoming physically aggressive about who’s sitting where is common among people with dementia. Staff should be trained to de-escalate. Either the facility failed to provide proper training or failed to hire enough staff. This story makes me sad.
