Hey, it’s 2020! Let’s go back to the 50’s! Quebec Conservative former staffer to both Stephen Harper and Jean Charest Provincially let loose a barrage of homophobia to ram home the point that the Conservative Party in Canada has issues with the LGBT community in spite of what some leadership hopefuls have to say.
“I think it is a choice. I think how people are behaving is one thing. I think government has the responsibility to enforce the traditional values we’ve had in past years,” he said.
In 2020 politics should be moved beyond gender, race, religion, but it hasn’t. At least not enough.
If Mr. Decarie had rolled with race or religion there would be calls for him to be turfed as a member of the party. That he’s had headlines about a possible run for leader is strange enough. Frankly his quotes should be considered a hate crime.
Not all hate involves burning crosses or even violence. Hate and Prejudice can be subtle, but it still is what it is.
But the big key here is the access and roles Mr. Decarie has had historically within a party that has issues. While some of the front runners are clearly grand standing by stomping on Mr. Decarie’s comments, they were both part of a government that he played a key support role in for their Prime Minister.
People need to be viewed based on the quality of their achievements; not because of their private personal choices.
Sadly MP Eric Duncan has now become the poster boy for the Cons becoming more Gay friendly. Mr. Duncan is not a good politician; or human for that matter. He won 52% of the votes in his riding against an unelectable candidate and is essentially as corrupt, if not more corrupt, than his predecessor former MP and thug, Guy Lauzon.
It’s time that people start to separate people like Mr. Decarie and Mr. Duncan from good people that are trying to make the world a better place.
It also shows how far behind the Conservative Party is when it comes to the choices that most Canadians make; even Conservative ones.
