Bishop Prendergast Cancels Mass for all 26 Catholic Churches in Cornwall & SD&G. 031420

All Sunday Masses Cancelled in Alexandria-Cornwall

March 14, 2020

Bishop Terrence Prendergast, bishop of the Diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall, has taken the unprecedented step of cancelling all weekend Masses in the Diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall, which includes the 26 Catholic churches in the counties of Stormont and Glengarry.

Amid increasing concerns over the spread of COVID-19, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer directed all event organizers to cancel any gathering larger than 250 people. Realizing that a number of parishes will have difficulty in keeping Mass attendance below 250 this weekend, the bishop has regrettably decided to ask our Catholic parishes to cancel all public LORD’S DAY Masses in the Diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall this weekend of March 14-15.

After the weekend, the Diocese will assess this decision for next weekend and any other that is required after consulting health officials.

Daily Masses in the parishes will continue uninterrupted at this time.

The complete text of the letter written by Bishop Prendergast to the faithful of the diocese can be found on the diocesan website at

May we continue to pray for all those infected with COVID-19, those caring for the sick and for one another.
