New York State Resident Arrested for Possession of Contraband Tobacco
CORNWALL, ON, Feb. 11 /CNW/ - A 23 year old female driver from Hogansburg, New York faces a charge for possession of a tobacco product not properly stamped under authority of the Excise Act 2001 following a RIDE program verification by the Ontario Provincial Police in Cornwall, Ontario. On February 10th, 2009, a 2002 Buick Rendezvous approached an OPP RIDE program check point in Cornwall, Ontario. The officers observed cardboard boxes of contraband tobacco in the vehicle that were covered with a black sheet and contacted RCMP officers from the Cornwall Detachment to assist. RCMP officers arrested the driver, seized 1,000 resealable bags of Discount Full Flavor brand cigarettes as well as the vehicle. The driver will appear at the Cornwall court on April 7th, 2009. "Through decades of experience dealing with this illegal market, enforcement efforts alone will not resolve the issues", said Sgt. Michael Harvey from the RCMP. "While enforcement is necessary, making an impact on this crime also requires public awareness, enhanced agency partnerships, and open and on-going dialogue with Aboriginal communities."
