Cornwall ON – The Cornwall Regional Task Force (CRTF) made or assisted in contraband tobacco seizures in the following regions between August 13th, 2010 and August 24th, 2010:
- 1 seizure at the Cornwall, Ontario Port of Entry
- 2 seizures in Cornwall, Ontario
- 3 seizures in South Glengarry, Ontario
- 2 seizures in South Stormont, Ontario
These seizures resulted in the arrest of three individuals who face charges under the federal Excise Act 2001 and/or the provincial Tobacco Tax Act for possession of a tobacco product not properly stamped:
- 2 from Cornwall, Ontario,
1 from Akwesasne, New York,
And
also resulted in the arrest and charges of the following three individuals:
Kenneth Simser (age 40) from Cornwall, Ontario;
Kevin Bovin (age 40) from Cornwall, Ontario who was also charged for Breach of a Peace Bond;
Charles Jason Hill (age 30) from Hogansburg, New York who was also charged with the Criminal Code offences of Dangerous Driving and Flight from Police
All three were held in custody for a Bail Hearing.
Items Seized:
• 7 vehicles described as 2001 Chevrolet 3500 van, 2007 Hyundai Tucson, 2002 Mazda MPV, 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 pick-up truck, 1999 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck, 2008 Ford E-250 van, 2000 Ford Windstar van
• 1 vessel described as a 1987 Bayliner Capri boat with a Mercruiser 5.0 litre motor
• 1 trailer described as a 2010 Home boat trailer
• 4,050 re-sealable bags each containing 200 contraband cigarettes
• 300 kilograms of fine cut tobacco contained in 12 garbage bags
• 2,700 cartons of PT brand little cigars in various fruit flavours
During this period the CRTF made several seizures at local marinas as well as assisting the Cornwall Community Police Service during their execution of a Search Warrant. If anyone notices suspicious activity, please contact the CRTF at 613-937-2800 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
