Long Sault Farmers Market Opening Day by Reg Coffey – June 2, 2012

Opening Day 2012

CFN -It is that time again. The farmer’s markets are springing up all over the place and the Long Sault Market is one of the first. Yesterday was a bit of a gloomy day but there was a steady stream of shoppers buying our products all afternoon.

This year the market has 11 full time vendors, all food and produce, and will host a number of charity events throughout the summer. Yesterday Rachel’s Kids were set up to sell tickets for a car that they are raffling off.

The core of the market has returned this year. Avonmore Berry Farm was there with the first produce of the year as well as Ingleside Tomatoes with those wonderful hothouse tomatoes and cucumbers, Swiss Farmer Bakery with fresh baked bread and sweet indulgences, Toi Thai Food with her amazing Spring Rolls and tasty Thai entrees, and of course there is always delicious coffee to wash it all down with. Next week I will highlight the newer vendors at the market which include two gluten free bakers and a plant grower.

A special treat yesterday from Avonmore Berry Farm was the first locally grown strawberries of the year. Andrew told me that they were lovingly covered and nurtured to give us a special treat at the market, weeks before they are normally available.

Fresh Produce and STRAWBERRIES

While the weather could have been a little better, from my point of view opening day was a big success. You should come out next week and see what I’m talking about.

The Market is open from 2 PM to 6 PM on Friday afternoon in front of the Long Sault strip mall, just look where all the tents are set up.
