CFN Municipal Candidate Reviews For Cornwall McDONALD MURPHY CLEMENT HEBERT DUPELLE

ballotCFN is reviewing and rating local candidates this election instead of endorsing.

Our next candidates for review are  Mark A MacDonald, David Murphy, Bernadette Clement, Carilyne Hebert, and Maurice Dupelle.

Mark A MacDonald is back on the attack.  He fought for many issues over the last four years.   Many had suggested that he run for council last term instead of Mayor.  He took his chance and missed, but how can anyone fault him for that?  Now he’s back to running for council and focusing on many of the issues that have scandalized our city the last four years.

Ratings are for Perceived Honesty & Integrity, Vision and Action, Accessibility & Accountability, Leadership & Strength, and Win#

All are on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the best.

David Murphy has had the polar opposite term that Maurice Dupelle has.  Instead of championing issues he’s chosen to wax his vocal cords on occasional issues; but never lead which is odd for someone that wants to run for mayor next term.  His petty animosities and politics have held him back.  Where Dupelle has shown clear growth and learning this term Murphy has simply sat back and gained weight.

Has played the game though that he still has a lot of support via his role with Benson and the Colts.  Has a looming scandal that will probably have to be addressed at some time over the next four years.

Bernadette “Boo Boo” Clement is a lawyer.  That colours her positions and role in the last four years far worse than any other elected official in the city.    She has done a lot of things “behind the scenes” as well an example being her role in the Julie Johnston letters where instead of being the first one to say we have to contact CCPS over the missing letters she instead advocated to keep the city from firing the long time nurse as was advocated by some of her confreres.

I have a hunch if she could she’d redo a few things.  Personally to this writer nothing defines her worse than her silence on Beavergate while being on the board of our River Institute and her silence on the city moving kill traps next to the beaver lodge in Guindon Park after the city was asked for a 90 day moratorium on trapping to present information to council.  That showed a true uncaring about life and they say that Serial Killers start out harming animals.

Has benefited the most from the City’s heaving spending with the Freeholder and Seaway News.

Carilyne Hebert has been playing politics for a long time even though she’s still young.  She’s part of Elaine MacDonald’s NDP push to grab power at City Hall (which will ultimately fail).  If energy and zing were all it took to win Ms Hebert would be in; but sadly this election she showed that she isn’t ready for prime time yet or how to manage media.

She sounded many times during the campaign as though she were running for Student Council instead of City Council and also seemed like a narrow focus candidate.  It should be interesting to see what she does the next four years in Cornwall if she doesn’t win.

If any of the current incumbents deserve a vote it would solely be Maurice Dupelle.   He’s made some mistakes in his first term, but he’s also learned a lot and taken giant steps.

No poll in the city shows him not returning to office.   The question for this scribbler is will he drift more like his seatmate this term Denis Thibault or will he have learned from his mistakes from the last term and evolve into a mayoralty candidate for the next election?
