ALFRED (Ontario) — The Alfred College Advisory Committee is glad to see consultations and analysis coming to a close concerning the future of Alfred College, and to know that the report of the facilitator, Marc Godbout, will soon be submitted to Ontario’s Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

The Chair of the Advisory Committee, Tom Manley, “congratulates Mr. Godbout and his staff for their excellent work, their openness towards the future, and their diligent consultations on local, sector, and provincial levels. Mr. Godbout’s staff spared no effort in pulling together all the recommendations and considering all the possibilities. We would like to thank our partners, Collège Boréal, La Cité, the University of Guelph, and all those who contributed to the process for their commitment and their vision of the future.”

Regarding the report that Mr Godbout will be submitting to the Minister, Tom Manley adds:

“We put our trust in the recommendation that Mr. Godbout will be making to the Minister without yet knowing all the details. He will certainly be able to draw on his experience and knowledge of the situation and on all the information obtained to propose a winning strategy for Alfred College and the Franco-Ontarian community. It is clear that the college’s future depends on the integration of three areas of activity that have local, provincial and national impact: formal education and professional development, research, and economic development.”

The Minister now has a decision to make following the report’s submission. The Alfred College Advisory Committee would therefore like to convey the following wishes:

  • That the report be made public shortly, so that everyone concerned can be informed.
  • That the Minister make a decision soon, since the University of Guelph is pulling out at the end of May 2015 and preparations should already be underway for the new term in the fall of 2015.
  • That the government commit sufficient funds to ensure that the recommended solution will be successfully implemented and to ensure its long term viability.
  • That the decisions about Alfred College be neither delayed nor tied to decisions on the future of Kemptville College, since the two situations are unrelated and very different.

In the coming weeks, the Alfred College Advisory Committee will join its partners in encouraging the Minister and the Ontario Government to act promptly.

The Alfred College Advisory Committee is a not-for-profit organization formed in 1997. Its Executive Committee includes representatives of the Union des cultivateurs franco-ontariens and directors who have been elected by the community. The committee’s objective is to ensure the development and expansion of Alfred College in support of the agricultural, agri-food and rural Francophone communities of Ontario.

It will be interesting to see more on the 2 colleges in the coming months. Alfred appears to be heading towards funding from other Francophone funded entities, while Kemptville is leaning towards non government entity funding.
