Dear Editor,
“Facemasks don’t work; they do nothing”… according to a Walmart security person on duty at the Ninth Street Walmart store in Cornwall, Ontario, on Friday afternoon, December 18th 2020.
This alternate fact was shared by a Walmart contracted security person while he intervened in a verbal exchange between a masked shopper, and a couple that were unmasked.
The exchange followed queries made by upset patrons to a smirking unmasked couple, and to Walmart floor staff, supervisors, and floor managers, as to why it seemed OK to roam about the store without legally mandated face coverings, and without being confronted.
When Walmart staff were asked if they challenged persons not wearing masks, they stated variously that; they didn’t see anyone maskless; they don’t challenge persons without masks; they do challenge but aren’t allowed to question why shoppers are maskless.
In Ontario, businesses have the right to refuse service to anyone contravening their store policies and/or the law (e.g. try getting served shirtless or shoeless).
On this afternoon, both policy and law were being flaunted by at least a dozen other clearly healthy customers (in just a half hour period), acting without care for the health and safety of patrons who were legitimately without masks, including very young children, and other patrons with compromised health.
If on the other hand readers of CFN do care, they might consider the dismal actions demonstrated within the Walmart in Cornwall, and demand changes or consider shopping elsewhere.
Yours respectfully,
Cy Mann – Cornwall Ontario
