Elliot Rodger Another Sad Chapter in US Gun Culture by Jamie Gilcig

CFN – Elliot Rodger somehow slipped through the net.  It’s not like he was invisible.  He was investigated by police after concern from his family and those in the outside world.

He put pleas into his you tube clips.  He posted in online forums where he was chastised.

Yet somehow, as disturbed as he was, he was able to get an awful lot of ammo and fire power and ended the lives of at least six and wounded many more.

Does any of this make sense?   Is this really a 2nd Amendment issue?   Surely there is a solution after seeing one tragedy after another?

This was not some criminal act of a gangster.  It was not motivated by money or drugs.   It wasn’t even motivated by sex ultimately.   It was committed by a very disturbed young man who came from an allegedly good family that cared and probably did most of the right things.    At 22 he had wealth and privilege.    He was not a visible minority or have his pants down low. He wasn’t wearing a trench coat.  He didn’t stick out in any manner unless you heard him speak.

Why was he a virgin at his age?  He wasn’t the worst looking guy on the planet?  And with his wealth if he was craving companionship there is the oldest profession….

Yet something triggered a series of behaviors the led to the deaths of so many so needlessly.

His final diatribe.

The Cruelty of Humanity and Women?

His voice seems disconnected as though he’s talking about another person instead of just himself.

Child hood

I will be a God, exacting my retribution on all those who deserve it, and you do deserve it just for the crime of living better life than me. All you popular kids you have never accepted me and now you will pay for it.

Girls, all I have ever wanted was to love you and to be loved by you. I wanted a girlfriend, I’ve wanted sex, love, adoration, but you think I am unworthy of it. That’s a crime that can never be forgiven. If I can’t have you, girls, I will destroy you.

Was there a way to have prevented Elliot Rodger?  Probably.  Should he have had access to firearms?  Probably not.

elliot rodger manifesto 1His writing has a stilting cadence, a bit Dickensian, with that feel of talking about another person.   This is yet another incident in the US that America has to wrestle with.  The current gun and firearm laws clearly do not work.    Shooting deaths compared to most other Western Countries are just unacceptably higher in the US.
Surely there are solutions that can at least help?    For the families of his victims and his own family, and those impacted there is no hope; only grief.
Another sad chapter in American Gun Culture and history….

  1. Not one word where he got the gun. So now that he used a knife and car also on victims, are we going to try and ban knives, cars, household appliances since you can kill someone with a fork, skillet, hammer etc. Was the gun purchased legally where in CA you have a waiting period? It wasn’t the guns that killed these poor women. It was a mentally disturbed young man who was IN THE SYSTEM as having mental problems. I BLAME the authorities for this. Our laws says “It isn’t against the law to be crazy. You can’t force a mental person in for treatment”. I think it is high time that this law should be changed.

  2. Author

Well there were several failures. It’s always easy to point blame retroactively, but these killings are not unique sadly; mostly in the US. There’s a solution somewhere between the status quo and banning guns outright.

Do the American people have the will to search for it? History says no. I’m not sure this sad event will change that.

  3. This young man was rich by his father and I can see by looking at him that he had all the luxuries but no real friends or girlfriends. The young man was considered to be effeminate. Things are mighty wrong with today’s society and I have noticed things getting much worse since they took away the Lord’s Prayer in the public schools. In my day none of these things have ever happened at all anywhere. We had our problems sometimes but never to take people’s lives. There is so much “Satanism” going on and yes even in little Cornwall. You would be surprised what I saw down there one day and my husband wondered what certain objects stood for and I did my best to explain it to him and he was frightened and said what a society. These crimes mostly take place in the US but they do happen here in Canada and sometimes in Europe. People are very sick today mentally. I have said it time and time again that money isn’t everything and what is important is to learn to be happy with oneself and live life in a happy way and life is way too short. I am not one who believes in taking guns entirely away but away from criminals and people with mental illnesses and the like.

  4. News reports are saying that all his guns were legally bought and registered. Americans insist on their right to arm everybody to the teeth, and still wonder why this stuff happens almost every week. Brilliant, for sure.

  5. Guns, environment, having no social life does not put murder and vengeance in the heart. It is already in the heart as sinners at war with God. A spiritual heart change is needed, before real love can be found there. No human operation, religion, philosophy, legal mandate, etc. can bring about this spiritual heart change. Part of the problem is that we do not believe in God’s diagnosis and cure! “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings”(Jer 17:9-10).

“For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man” (Mark 7:21-23).

  6. Yes Mr. Newton. It has nothing to do with having the whole population packing heat. It’s the evil-eyed fornicating blasphemers who are responsible for the carnage.

  7. If “everyone was packing heat”, someone would have neutralized him before he did so much. Gun free zones are victim zones.

  8. Furtz – statistically it is a fact that law abiding citizens that have permits to carry guns have a record of using their guns responsibly, crime rates have dropped considerably.

  9. The population of California is slightly larger than the total population of Canada

  10. Mzaz, you said:

“You can’t force a mental person in for treatment. I think it is high time that this law should be changed”

Actually, in Ontario, if a person is deemed a threat to them self or another person, A Medical Dr. can have the individual detained in a psychiatric facility for up to 72 hours on what is called a “form 1”. After that, the Dr, can detain them for another 2 weeks on a “form 3” if it is considered necessary. There are other options available to the psychiatrist if the patient needs to be detained further. this system is not fool proof but it does help.

Regarding the banning of household appliances and cars etc: These things are intended to be used as tools to make life easier. Handguns are intended to be used for killing people.

  11. Pastor Tom said:

“statistically it is a fact that law abiding citizens that have permits to carry guns have a record of using their guns responsibly”.

If I’m not mistaken, these people are targets for thieves who steal and then sell the guns on the black market, to criminals; the prevalent gun culture in the US, contributes to the theft of legal handguns which then end up in the hands of criminals

  12. This young man caused quite a stir because my husband and I were in the car this morning and on the news someone at a MacDonald’s in the suburb of Barrhaven stabbed someone. Everytime some nutcase in the US starts something then other nutcases everywhere do a copycat version. Society is very sick today. The only time a mental patient can be locked up is if they do something to hurt or kill someone or themselves. The drugs that doctors give their patients has a lot to do with the crimes because it makes them worse. We first started to hear a lot when the Columbine High School shootings happened in Colorado and after that everyone else showed their insanity.

  13. Ohh Jules you make me laugh….. Not!!!! You are omni knowledgeable!!!!! Not. You have the answer to everything!!!!!! Not.
This man or boy, has many problems that were never recognized or treated. How very sad for him and all the victims that he claimed. I do not have the answers, nor do I proclaim to know why people do what they do. Not everyone shows their insanity, just the ones who seem to know the answers to ALL the problems!

  14. Oh how nice of a complement you gave me Miss Hind End Steak but you know absolutely nothing about me and you are mighty jealous of myself because I do have a lot of knowledge and answers something that you do not have at all whatsoever. Until your brain gets sharper and you get some sanity I would suggest that you keep your insults to yourself.

  15. Jamie I have something for you to read and it is all about this young man Elliot. Go on globalresearch.ca and you will get lots of news there. I will give you the write up about young Elliot just now for you to read:

Another Mass Killing Spree in California. The Insanity of Modern Life.

This is a very big problem in North America and it surpasses anywhere else in the world. So many people have severe mental problems and it is mighty hard to diagnose. I was on a forum one time with a woman whose daughter had Asperghers disease and she had a son with the same thing. Something is mighty wrong somewhere and I think it has to do with genetics. Globalresearch.ca is an excellent place to go to for news and one of the owners is an economics professor at the University of Ottawa but lives in Montreal. This is a well known site for news.
